Knee fractures are serious injuries that can affect various parts of the joint, including the distal femur, proximal tibia, and patella. These fractures can result from high-energy traumas (such as traffic accidents), falls, or sport impacts. Each type of fracture has specific characteristics and treatments that vary according to the severity and location of the injury.
A distal femur fracture occurs in the lower part of the thigh bone, near the knee joint. This type of fracture, although uncommon, is often caused by high-energy trauma, such as car accidents or falls from height. They can also occur in individuals with bone fragility (for example, those with osteoporosis) after lower-energy traumas.
A patella fracture occurs in the bone that forms the front of the knee. It can happen due to a fall directly onto the knee or a strong impact, such as in a car collision.
The proximal tibia fracture (often referred to as a tibial plateau fracture) occurs in the upper leg, affecting the surface of the knee joint. This type of fracture can result from direct impacts or high-energy trauma, such as collisions in contact sports or traffic accidents.
Immobilization: In stable and non-displaced fractures, casts or splints can be used to immobilize the knee and allow for bone healing (or consolidation).
Internal fixation: In displaced fractures, surgery is necessary to realign and stabilize the bones, typically using plates or pins and screws; in patella fractures, wires and metal threads, or anchors and sutures may also be used.
Arthroscopy: When appropriate, arthroscopy can be used as part of the surgical procedure to allow for a less invasive approach, to assess the extent of joint damage, and to assist in the repair of internal meniscal or ligament injuries or in the removal of loose bodies.
